Hi guys,
I bought the full Sonos 5.1 set about a week ago. I knew it was only capable of DD5.1 and not DTS but I didn't care because with my last surround setup - a 12 year old Denon AVR + small surround speakers, I was never able to tell the difference between DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 (but the 12 year old AVR was able to support DTS, of course). So I was perfectly fine with DD5.1 with the great Sonos build- and sound quality and the hassle-free wireless setup.
Then the first dissapointment. My just 3-months old Samsung TV only supports 2.0 stereo sound from the optical out :(
Ok, in addition to the 1800 Euros for the 5.1 setup I also spent 60 Euros for a toslink splitter with remote and 3 optical cables (for the BDPlayer, AppleTV and the connection splitter-playbar). This solution works great and I can automaticaly switch inputs with my Harmony remote. The setup is now of course not that simple any more, but the splitter and cables are hidden, so I'm ok with that...
I was testing some of my BluRay discs. For example, I checked the sound-difference playing James Bond - Casino Royale. It sounds really great in DD5.1, but way worse in 2.0 from the TV, upmixed by the Playbar to "virtual" 5.1. With my toslink splitter I can easily tell the difference by switching inputs from direct link to the playbar (DD5.1) to the TV optical out (2.0) within a second (the sound of the BD player is transmitted through optical and HDMI simultaneously). If the playbar supported HDMI, it worked without the splitter.
Now to the real problem. I checked some of my newer BluRay Disks and they only output DTS. So my brand new 1800 Euro Setup remains silent with these movies!! Today I went to the store to check the sound specs on current BluRay movies - nearly all of those I checked (maybe 30 different movies) only support DTS, no more DD5.1!! - and that I didn't know before buying the Sonos system.
I am really in the buyer's remorse stage right now. I don't know if I can bring all the stuff back to the store. Maybe the 2 play:3, but I bought the Playbar and the Sub in a small store that doesn't take things back :( It sounded so great at the store that I never thought I could ever intend to regret the purchase - even at the steep price point.
If I only knew that DTS support is coming and can be added through software (as talked about here in the forums)... the Sonos sales rep at the store told me today that DTS was coming definitely, but I don't know, I couldn't find anything here on the Sonos websites but the request by the users that is under consideration by Sonos.
What do you think? What would you do?
Of course I can still watch current movies through my TV output in stereo, that gets upmixed by Sonos to simulated 5.1, but doesn't that suck with a system that expensive?? I mean s t e r e o.
[EDIT] Actually, I _do want_ to keep the Sonos 5.1 setup, I'm listening to it right now with Spotify and I love the sound quality _and_ the looks of it. It's just a great and versatile setup. Maybe I'll pay the price of the lesser sound quality with current BD movies. But I think it's just sad because it could handle it just fine with DTS support. I hope Sonos brings it to us with a future firmware upgrade. Just read a copy of an online chat with Sonos reps and they said it's possible, so hopefully...
