Wired Play:5 drops out and disappears from controllers

I completely reconfigured my home LAN to try to improve laggy Wifi by adding a wireless access point, and I seem to have made my Sonos setup worse.

I have a Play:5 wired straight to my router, and a wireless Play:3 in another room. Since the reconfiguration the Play:5 frequently drops out, and sometimes disappears from one or more controller (Android phone, laptop connected via Wifi). Whenever it disappears, the Play:3 is still visible and controllable. Indeed at one stage the two players were grouped when the Play:5 dropped out and disappeared, and the Play:3 carried on playing music, which I found odd given that it must rely on the Play:5 as its source.

This mostly happens when streaming music from my NAS, though has also happened when listening to Internet radio.

I have tried the usual recommendation of power cycling EVERYTHING on the network in the right sequence (router > WAP > wired Sonos > wireless Sonos > everything else).

I've also tried reserving IP addresses in the DHCP pool for the Sonos devices.

Here's a rough description of my home LAN:

- Router (Virgin Superhub, wifi switched off but still in router mode) wired to Play:5
- TP-Link WR841N connected to router via Powerline adapters. All 'routing' functions disabled eg. DHCP - in use as wireless access point as it is situated far more centrally in the house than my router. Given fixed IP address outside the router's DHCP pool. Works great for wifi (non-Sonos) in general.
- NAS connected to router via same Powerline adapters as WAP
- Play:3 connecting wirelessly

I understand that ethernet over power is not fully supported, however I'm really pleased with the general performance of the WAP so am reluctant to go back to having my wifi source by my router - it's right in one corner of my house. Besides I've had issues when the Play:5 is streaming direct from the internet, which shouldn't involve the powerline adapters at all.

Is there something I can check (perhaps on the <Play:5 IP>:1400/support page) when these dropouts/disappearances occur?
