Dropouts with specific DAC

Hi!

I have a curious problem. Using a Z90 with a Hegel HD11 DAC I get short (about one tenth of a second) dropouts every half hour or so.

This happens only with this particular DAC, and neither through the analogue outputs og the ZP90 or when I play via my other DAC (Benchmark DAC 1 PRE).

The dropouts occur only when I use one of HD11s two coax inputs. When I use the Toslink optical input everything is OK.

I have tried to restart my system (I have 5 zones) and only using the firs zone (wired to my Apple Airport Exteme router), but still the dropouts occur.

I have also tried another of my ZP90 - same problem. To be sure I also tried a ZP80 - the first Sonos unit I bought. Still dropouts with the Hegel DAC.

I have also tried several coax cables - same result.

I have contacted Hegel about the problem, but so far no answer.

Based on my research, it seems to me that this is no network problem, but might be a matter of patchy handshake between ZP90 and the Hegel DAC.

Maybe the Hegel DAC is be a bit more picky when it comes to electrical spdif than other dacs. But strangely enough the Hegel DAC does not seem to have any dropout issues with any other components with coax out.

I have used several cheap BD and DVD players, and some very old CD players. Everything works fine. So far only ZP90 have caused trouble for the Hegel.

There is a posting on this forum from 2006 that seems to describe something similar, but with another DAC. But as far as I can see no cause was found.

I realize that this might seem like a minor problem. But I like the sound of my Hegel DAC very much, and would of course like to use it with my main source of music, which is my Sonos Network.

The Toslink input is already occupied by my digital radio, so using optical is no option either.

I have all my music on a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4, which works fine in all other zones and with other Dacs.

Apart from this slight glitch I am very satisfied with Sonos (I surely hadn’t bought six units if I weren’t…).

All help and input will be greatly appreciated.
