So, my wife bought me a Sonos Playbar for my birthday, mostly because she's tired of the surround speakers on stands that our 2 year-old can knock over (never has).
I have 6 HDMI sources (DirecTV, XBox, Roku, AppleTV, PS3, Chromecast).
I have an A/V Receiver with several HDMI inputs and Optical output.
My Sony television will not output Opitcal audio from anything but it's own internal Tuner (which is useless).
I tried hooking the optical audio output from my receiver to the Playbar, but nothing I could do would allow my A/V remote volume up/down to control the volume on the Playbar. It would pass the original "I see a remote", but always failed on the "Press Volume + 3 times" stating nothing happened.
I then bought an HDMI splitter with Optical audio out. However, now I have a new problem:
What remote do I use to control the Playbar volume? None of the sources hooked to it have volume up/down (XBox, PS3, Roku), they all assume you have it hooked to a receiver / TV and are controlling the volume that way.
At this point, the only way I can use the Playbar is to constantly change the volume using the iPhone application, that's hardly useful.
