Play:3 "dropping " from controllers

Thanks in advance for any help that is provided.

I have a Play:3 that I did a reset on and was able to successfully "add a component" with. It shows up in the controller app as "unused". When I try to add it to a group or play something on it - it disappears from the controller. The white light stays on - solid.

It is connected over wifi and is sitting about 15 feet from the bridge.

Any thoughts on what is causing this behavior and steps towards resolution?
