Newbie, Airport Express and extending Sonos

Apologies if this is a dumb question but can someone try to explain to me the relationship between a home wifi network (as broadcast, in my case by an Apple Airport Time Capsule AND an Apple Airport Express) and Sonos Bridges? My understanding is that Sonos must be linked to the home wifi BUT broadcasts its own WiFi network. I have just split my Sonos system so i have several speakers and a bridge downstairs (the bridge being ethernet cable wired into my Apple Time Capsule) and now a Play 1, Play 3 and Play 5 upstairs. In order to boost WiFi reception upstairs i have an Airport Express. In order to boost Sonos reception upstairs i have plugged in a new Sonos Bridge upstairs. This is recognised by my setup as a new Bridge. What i am unclear about is how this new bridge works - does it "detect" the Sonos network being broadcast from downstairs and amplify it upstairs? I am not sure how i know if it is active in my Sonos setup or if i need to plug it into the Airport Express with the ethernet cable it ships with. I hope this makes sense to someone. I have always been confused by the Sonos needs wifi but has its own wifi thing.
